Interlaw is launching AI training for 8,000 lawyers to promote responsible use of the technology. The global network aims to set standards for AI use across its 90 member firms, including law clinics at participating universities and and NGO affiliates at the AI Legal Mate Project (www.ailegalmate.com). The eight-session program aims to make AI less stressful and more approachable while establishing best practices within the network.

The American Bar Association issued its first set of ethics guidance for lawyers who use AI tools in July, advising here lawyers to consult with clients about the use of AI and adjust fees as necessary. The duty to protect confidential client information is also paramount as lawyers test AI tools.

Manucci, a partner at Brazil's Manucci Advogados and a member of the Interlaw network, told Law.com International that Brazilian clients have instructed his firm not to use AI, while international clients have asked for careful handling when employing the technology. Brazil has a comprehensive data protection law that broadly mirrors the EU General Data Protection Act (GDPR), with financial penalties for companies that misuse personal data of Brazilians.

Marlon Fetzner, the Florida-based regional director for legal and corporate affairs for LATAM at Microsoft, demonstrated how lawyers can deploy Microsoft's Copilot application for tasks like summarizing a meeting. Microsoft's legal team has been organizing data to help train AI so that the department can eventually reap more efficiencies from the technology.

AI helps, but it does not replace lawyers. Interlaw's AI training is part of a larger effort to promote responsible use of AI across its network of 90 member firms.
